Through exploration of the metal inserts, children are developing the hand grips essential for writing.  By tracing along the edge of the insert or frame, children are practicing and strengthening their three-finger pencil grip, as well as coordinating the necessary wrist movements as they manoeuvre their pencil around both curved and straight lines.

The inclusion of the geometric shapes adds an extra element for discussion as children are also engaging in the mathematical language of shape, differentiations, angles and curves.
