Sound Boxes

• 2 sets of 6 sealed wooden cylinders
• 2 wooden storage boxes with either a blue or red lid
• Each cylinder has either a blue or red top, to match their storage box
• Each cylinder makes a distinct sound when shaken
• Cylinders are graded from very soft to loud
• A cylinder from 1 box, will match the sound of a cylinder in the other box
• Suitable for age 2+ years 

Tips & ideas

The introduction of the Sound Boxes encourages children's development of auditory discrimination as they grade a variety of sounds.  By having matching sounds across the boxes, children can test their auditory senses by attempting to match the sounds.

The understandings gained from these explorations encourage children to use their auditory senses during everyday interactions and to investigate further, such as identifying if sounds are far away or close by.
