The Story Behind the Design
‘“Country Colours” is a representation of the different colours of our beautiful landscape and terrain in Australia. The circles and different shades of brown throughout the piece represent the land and some of the shades of ochres that can be found throughout Australia. Ochres have been used by Aboriginal people for thousands of years for many reasons. It was used for the telling of story in many art forms, used for painting bodies during dance and ceremonies and was also on different items and equipment as well as on natural surfaces throughout our country. The brown lines over these circles symbolize the land as being a living force just as the people are, living together and providing for each other evenly. On top of all of this, lies people sitting around together sharing and continuing culture on country. The hands represent the pride and identity of Aboriginal culture. A few kangaroo tracks can also be seen throughout the piece.’
