‘Silly Birds’ is a heart-warming tale suitable for ages 3 to 9. Through a blend of humility, charm, and humour, the story introduces Maliyan, a majestic eagle known for his keen observations from a distance. When Mailyan befriends Wagun, a comical yet silly turkey, their antics take a toll on their surroundings, leading to disappointment from their Elders and Mailyan’s parents. The local billabong turns into chaos as the silly birds’ actions have unintended consequences.
As the narrative unfolds, Maliyan realises the impact of their behaviour and attempts to guide his feathered friends toward a more responsible path. However, his efforts fall on deaf ears until he embarks on a journey of self-discovery and learning. ‘Silly Birds’ weaves together intricate illustrations of native animals with a touch of Australian humour, delivering a powerful message that it’s a challenge to rise above when you’re surrounded by those who don’t share your vision.
Written and illustrated by Gregg Dreise, a descent of Kamilaroi and Euahlayi people located in south-west Queensland into north-west New South Wales. Silly Birds was the recipient of the prestigious Speech Pathology Australia Indigenous Book of the Year Award for 2015.
